Chandler Police Lineup

Students Group Shot

WHO: Desert Car Care Center of Chandler, MADD Arizona and Chandler Police Department partner for 6th annual ‘Tie One On For Safety®’ public awareness campaign to designate a non-drinking driver during the holiday season.

In December of 2013, Chandler Police Officer David Payne was the spokespersons at the inaugural event. On October 31, 2014, while on duty and stopped at a red light, Officer Payne was rear-ended by an impaired driver who was determined to be more than three times the legal limit. Tragically, Officer Payne did not survive his injuries and died. Since 2014, we continue to educate in honor of his dedication and passion against drunk driving, and as a motorcycle officer, he also served on the East Valley DUI Task Force.

On June 10th, 2018, Chandler Police Emergency Call Taker Cathy Coppes was killed in a vehicle collision approximately 20 miles north of Flagstaff. She was operating a motorcycle and was traveling southbound. A vehicle traveling northbound crossed the center line and struck Cathy head on and she was killed on impact. Cathy started her career with the Chandler Police Department in April 2002.

WHAT: Those who participate will receive a ‘Tie One On For Safety®’ MADD decal, a free set of windshield wiper blades (contoured wiper blades extra),and a voucher for 20% off any repair or service up to $100.00 at Desert Car Care Chandler through January 31, 2019. The Hungry Monk Food Truck will be on-site to serve breakfast.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is calling on Congress to hold hearings to address the rising number of tragedies occurring on our nation’s roadways, following the October 8, 2017 announcement by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that overall traffic fatalities and those caused by drunk driving increased for the second straight year.

According to NHTSA, 37,461 people were killed in traffic crashes in 2016, and drunk driving was involved in 10,497 traffic fatalities. Drunk driving fatalities are up 1.7 percent over 2015, when 10,320 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes. The new data shows a 5.6 percent increase in overall traffic fatalities — up from 35,485 traffic fatalities in 2015. The overall traffic fatality increase of 8.4 percent in 2015 was the largest increase since 1963 to 1964, and alcohol-related fatalities increased in 2015 by 3.2 percent.

Pledge To Drive Sober (attached): This holiday season, I give my family, my friends and myself the gift of life. I pledge to not drink and drive or ride with an impaired driver, let my friends drink and drive or ride with an impaired driver, and to always wear my seatbelt. I make the commitment to always have a designated driver.

Tips to keep your family and friends safe this season:

  • Promote the non-drinking designated driver concept in party invitations.
  • Host parties by providing alternate transportation or accommodation.
  • Have bedrooms and your sofa ready for those who need to spend the night.
  • Provide plenty of food, yet avoid too many salty snacks, which tend to make people thirsty and drink more.
  • Designate a non-drinking driver BEFORE the celebration begins.
